Mile High Dining was lucky to participate in an Art, Cuisine, and Wine cruise in Southern France. Our first tasting was at a small village, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We are in the burgundy area of Southern France and at the Maison Boucheron winery. This winery has grapes covering 6400 acres and they use 13 different varieties of grapes. We had one white and two reds paired with cheese for tasting. Many of our boatload of travelers enjoyed the aged red wine. In fact, I ordered two bottles to be delivered as four of us split a case.
The second tasting was at the Château de Rully, which is a medieval fortress. Again, there was a white and two reds to taste. No cheese was provided but a small warm bun to enjoy. This wine was rated just OK and sadly, it was overpriced. Not many bottles were purchased.
The best part of the tasting was the education provided about how grapes take on minerals from the rocky soil to provide extra flavors. Southern France surely enjoys wine
