Comal is a training program for immigrant women to learn restaurant job skills using their heritage recipes. They are open for lunch only Tuesday thru Friday. The virus pandemic caused 95% of the income to disappear. They were planning to close but the Frasca restaurant group organized a fund raiser dinner at Comal. Many employees from the Frasca group helped the Comal staff. There was also a silent auction that raised thousands of dollars.
We enjoyed several light appetizers such as the grilled cheese pictured on the patio followed by an eight course picnic style dinner with a choice of several wines. A summer salad, main dishes ( family style ) consisting of rigatoni, vegetables, tamales, bruschetta, Pollo, beans and rice pudding for dessert. The strong black Ethiopian coffee accompanied with incense helped finish a fun and educational supper.
The New York Times listed Comal as one of the best 50 restaurants in the United States. Even if that is not true, try to find a weekday for lunch to help these women! Remember the foods varies. When we ate in the past, it was Syrian woman serving Syrian food.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
The verdict ⚖️ for Comal Heritage Incubator is Good.
