Mile High Dining attended the Instituto Frasca per il Vino about Spain and Portugal wines. It’s a very serious and expensive review of the wine history of the countries and the hidden gems of wine. It was led by the Frasca team of Bobby Stuckey and Carlin Karr. We tasted 11 different wines. The class had 30 participants. Besides a large tv screen projecting each topic, we received a booklet covering the history and the wines. No Porto please!

Of all the Western European countries Spain was the last to devote land to the wine culture but now it has the largest numbers of acres devoted to vineyards. The area in the central part of the country is now the home of the King of Spanish wines, Rioja. The Tempranillo and granacha grapes have started a revolution of winemaking. We enjoyed a glass of the La Rioja Alta.
Portugal on the other hand has great white wines that are grown on the hillsides of the steep mountains. With hot summers and cold winters, the Douro river valleys produce bright and delicious wines. We loved the Pormenor Reserva Branco. Not being a white wine drinker, I found an exception. Enjoy!
