One of Denver‘s newest restaurants, A5, is an upscale steakhouse with lots of seafood options. They even have a pop-up oyster bar manned by the award-winning shucker, Oyster Wulff. The restaurant is located in the remodeled Wazee supper club building. A5 is the symbol for the best Waygu Japanese steak. The restaurant is part of the Culinary Creative chain of restaurants and coffee shops in Denver which includes the Maine Shack, Mister Oso, and about a dozen others.
We started with oysters and finished with vegetables and everything in between. Eight oysters from Canada and the US were paired with scallops. With the extra finely sliced horseradish, the oysters and scallops were delicious. The scallops were topped with a little bit of chili.
The first fish taste was Monterey squid presented with sliced peppers. The crust on the squid was crunchy and tasty. The presentation was very inviting.
Next, we had the A5 Waygu steak. It just 4 ounces and it’s the softest steak we have ever eaten. These cows had to be treated and raised differently. It’s an excellent dish.
Since we love seafood we had the black cod with Beurre Blanc sauce. The skin is grilled black and crusty but the fish is soft and it retains its flavor. The sauce just adds more and different flavors.
The last dish of the evening was the roasted cauliflower. The sauce actually made cauliflower taste good.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
The verdict ⚖️ for A5 is Excellent. The food and service were top-notch. This is my only third excellent rating placing it with Frasca Food and Wine and Matsuhisa Denver. It’s expensive but worth several visits. After dinner we were allowed to go into the kitchen and told the head chef, Max, we enjoyed the meal! We have followed Max from the Squeaky Bean to Maine Shack to Morin and now A5.
