Mile High Dining went to Matsuhisa Denver, a foodie’s Japanese restaurant. It’s owned by Nobu Matsuhisa and his empire has over 40 restaurants from Tokyo to Paris and 13 hotels. He also has written 7 books and has even appeared in a James Bond movie.
We started with the Yellowtail sushi with jalapenos. One of the prettiest ways to present fish. Yellowtail is a tuna-like fish with a mild flavor but with added jalapenos and cilantro it’s a very good combination. The fish is sitting in yuzu sauce which is lemon-like. There is even a star-shaped carrot sitting on too.
The new style salmon was delicious. The fish is placed in hot oil on the grill for about 3 seconds and served still paired with the oil. It was delicious as the hot oil intensified the salmon flavor. My favorite dish of the evening.
The Tiradito roll was the classic sushi roll using white fish. With the ginger, it was just spicy enough to enjoy our medium-bodied sake. Not being a sake fan, our server directed us to a fruity and mild flavored sake that tasted better as we eat.
We were presented with gratuitous Japanese peaches sitting in a bowl of ice that was lighted. Very pretty! We noticed the bright blue light bowls being delivered to a table near us and asked the server what was the dish. She said it was their premium with caviar. I declined the caviar but she said don’t worry I have an idea and promptly came back to our table with a bright blue lighted bowl with two Japanese peaches on top. Further, it were free!
For dessert, we had the Rice Toban with ice cream and dried fruit pieces. The rice was easily the best-tasting rice we ever have eaten. It’s served sitting on a very hot metal plate while the ice cream is on the top. Delicious.
The service kept our table immaculately clean by taking the dirty dishes and promptly replacing them with clean ones. The restaurant is beautiful and offers several seating options at the bar, sushi counter, or the dining area. We even enjoyed the valet parking.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
The verdict ⚖️ for Matsuhisa Denver is Excellent. The presentation of the food is tops and all the dishes were excellent tasting. After reviewing over 125 restaurants in the Denver/Boulder area, this is only the second time Mile High Dining has given an excellent verdict⚖️. The other excellent went to Frasca Food and Wine. The thoughtful server went out of her way and created a dish so we could have a lighted blue bowl sit on our table.
