Mile High Dining enjoyed a causal supper at Angelo’s Taverna. Angelo’s has been in business almost 50 years, originally as a pizza and bar hang out, then remodeled about 10 years ago to include Italian pasta dishes, oysters, and an outside patio. It still has the classic stained glass windows. The three of us arrived early on Saturday, they do not take reservations, be prepared for a wait as it’s very popular. Due to Denver’s bad air quality this weekend, we elected to sit inside.
We enjoyed the several items from the happy hour menu and the regular menu. Our oyster order included chargrilled oysters with cheese and two chipotle bourbon butter oysters. Next, a large salad with salmon, toasted ravioli, crabcake slider, pappardelle pasta entree. One of my guests finished the meal with the housemade limoncello.
The chargrilled oysters are grilled then served with garlic, butter, and a cheese topping. A great taste. The chipotle bourbon butter oysters are also grilled then top with bourbon, butter, and chipotle. Even a better tasting oyster.
The pasta dish selected was the pappardelle which had cream and Parmesan sauce with a large slice of toasted bread. It’s very large offering and was given an excellent taste award by one of the diners. The small side salad presented a pretty green color next to the pasta dish.
The large dinner salad with the grilled salmon was mediocre as the fish lacked much seasoning and the dressing was too plain tasting.
The other two disappointing dishes were the toasted raviolis with a side of marinara and the crabcake slider. Toasting the pasta resulting in losing the taste. Regrettably, we had to try something different just once. The slider lacked the sought-after crab flavor as there was not enough crab meat.
One diner finished with the cheesecake topped with Carmel sauce and enjoyed the flavors.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
The verdict ⚖️ for Angelo’s Taverna is Good. Just stick with the grilled oysters and pasta entree dishes. Also, our server did a good job especially explaining the housemade limoncello.
