Mile High Dining enjoyed a summertime meal outdoors surrounded by a vegetable garden at Bittersweet. The address on Alameda Avenue is intimidating believing it would be too loud. But the good news it was fine. Bittersweet has been at this address for approximately 10 years. The building is a remodeled gas station with vegetable gardens everywhere. The restaurant features it’s home grown veggies in every plate. It’s expensive but worth the visit and the thoughtful server even helped us to lower the cost by combining our choices into the tasting menu.
We enjoyed six different dishes of ravioli, Panzanella, tart, salad, chicken, strawberry dessert, and several glasses of wine. The presentation on each of the dishes is excellent.
The first dish was the spring pea ravioli. Large ravioli filled with peas sitting in a delightful broth is a summertime way to enjoy pasta.
The watermelon Panzanella is a compressed watermelon slice topped with cucumber, cherries, and goat cheese is not only good to look at but a great taste for a warm summer evening.
The garden tart has comte cheese, and lots of fresh vegetables from their garden, and it served warm. It’s covered with lots of greens and we enjoyed the flavor.
The Lyonnaise salad has pork belly, a whole soft boiled egg, chicharron, compressed apples, and lots of greens. Different but good.
The menu has just three main dishes consisting of chicken, wild boar, and ribs, so we selected Thai chicken with vegetable fried rice. The fried rice was presented wrapped in a paper thin omelette but the rice was too dry and there was not enough vegetables. The Thai chicken had a good chicken taste but presented with the rice was disappointing.
For dessert, we shared the strawberry mousse that is displayed in a grand style. The strawberries come from their vegetable garden and the red sauce on the plate is made from beets. The ice cream is even basil flavored. The large red “wing” topping presumably is made from strawberries mixed with chocolate and it was delicious.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
The verdict ⚖️ for Bittersweet is Very Good.
