American Elm Restaurant is located on W. 38th Ave. in the Berkeley neighborhood, Denver, Colorado. The building has been several other restaurants in the past including Way Back and the Revelry. The parking is convenient but not well lit at night. The restaurant itself is rather dark. Once again, the kitchen is hidden behind a closed door. In warner weather the restaurant has several garage doors to open to a large patio.
The food is American style. The four of us had the Whole Trout, Caesar salad with chicken, Seared scallops, and Mac & cheese with two starters of olives with roasted nuts and the artichoke dip. As for drinks, we enjoyed a Coke, Rose Cider, and two Craggy Range white wine.
First, the appetizers starting with the olives and roasted nuts. The olives were delicious as they had a tangy flavor. Roasted nuts are just roasted nuts. The artichoke dip with vegetables and bread was just okay as the veggies were too plainly presented.
The Whole Trout was very lightly breaded and fried. The taste was very good as it was fish without the fishy taste. The Caesar Salad with chicken filled the plate but the side of chicken was too plain. It needs a little sauce or a topping of some spices. The Seared Scallops served on a plate of vegetables were delicious. The scallops were tasty as pepper and salt were present in the searing. Sadly, the Mac and Cheese was lacking a tasty cheese taste as they were drowning in bread crumbs. At an American food style restaurant., Mac and cheese should be the best and not sad.
My ratings are: It’s OK, Good, Very Good, and Excellent.
My verdict ⚖️ for the American Elm is Good.
